Angels and Venture Capital Firms in the Real Estate Industry

Finding strong venture capital firms (VCs) or business angels is currently not easy. Fears of inflation and rising interest rates are putting even more pressure on the real estate industry—and its investors—than on many other sectors. To ensure that good ideas don’t go unnoticed, we’ve done the research and created a VC and business angel list dedicated exclusively to the real estate sector (i.e. PropTech).

Our focus is on the topics closest to our hearts: BIM, Smart Building, ESG, and Technical Monitoring.

There are several thousand active investors across the DACH region. But who actually invests with a focus on PropTech, BIM, Smart Building, and ESG?
Of course, you occasionally read in the press that one investor or another has backed a PropTech startup. But a solid, comprehensive list of all relevant VCs and business angels? It doesn’t exist! (And if it does, shame on us for not researching properly.)

So we simply created one ourselves:
a list of the most active investors in the PropTech sector.

Our first challenge was identifying the relevant PropTech startups in the fields of BIM, Smart Building, and ESG. To do this, we analyzed the PROPTECHMAP EUROPE 2022 (www.proptechmap.com/
) and assigned the top PropTechs from the categories “Building Operations” and “Smart City Solutions” to our Smart Building category. From the PropTech Map Germany, we were able to identify the relevant BIM startups. ESG-focused PropTechs were sourced primarily from Brutkasten and ZIA.

Over the coming weeks, we will publish the full research online—including PropTech startups, their investors, and total funding amounts—so that everyone can comment and share additional recommendations for promising startups in these areas. Since researching all PropTechs, VCs, business angels, and funding rounds is extremely time-consuming for a side project, we’d love to open this up to the community 😉

Even at this early stage, however, you’ll get a comprehensive market overview and concrete names of VCs and business angels who repeatedly invest in PropTech startups. So if you’re currently building a PropTech, these are the people you should be talking to 💰💰💰. They likely have strong networks and can help open doors within the real estate industry.

But how do I get my idea in front of an angel?

Business angels usually invest via an investment holding or venture capital firm. That’s why you’ll sometimes find only rather cryptic VC names in the list.

Many investment firms have a website. The legal notice (imprint) often reveals who is behind the firm—and almost all angels are (at least technically) reachable via LinkedIn. If there’s no website, Northdata is another useful option. It’s a great resource for identifying the managing directors of holding companies—who, in most cases, are the business angels themselves.

Then it’s time to write, call, and pitch your idea!
