• BIM
Application in Existing Buildings and Across the Lifecycle
from the series ‘BIM for Municipalities’

What can you expect?

The third module expands the perspective beyond the planning and construction phase. Andreas Sankovitsch and Miguel Ebbers highlight how BIM creates value throughout the entire lifecycle of buildings and infrastructure. A key focus is the use of BIM in existing buildings—an area that is particularly relevant for municipalities, as many buildings are older and need refurbishment, conversion, or energy-efficient modernization.

Participants will learn how the BIM methodology can be applied in maintenance and refurbishment projects. The module shows how digital twins create transparency across the building stock and support long-term investment decisions. Sustainability also plays a central role: digital twins help municipalities identify energy efficiency potential and achieve climate targets. Practical examples illustrate how municipalities can move from reactive to proactive action through targeted data management and maintenance.

Another topic is the interface between capturing existing assets and future construction projects. Participants will learn how existing buildings and infrastructure can be recorded and prepared for use in future planning processes. The module concludes with an outlook on how BIM can be embedded into the long-term strategy of municipal building development. Overall, the module provides a comprehensive view of BIM’s potential across the entire lifecycle.
