Robotics and Automation Systems as an Opportunity for the Construction Industry

The entire construction industry is currently undergoing a transformation. Key drivers include challenges such as the need for affordable and environmentally friendly housing, the reduction of environmental impact during construction and operation, and—partly due to demographic change—a growing shortage of skilled workers. In this context, automation and the use of robotic systems offer significant potential for the construction industry to increase productivity, efficiency, and flexibility in production processes. Robots not only enhance safety and cost efficiency, but also improve sustainability and environmental compatibility by increasing quality and reducing construction waste. This ongoing development increasingly requires specialized knowledge from all stakeholders involved.

To approach the topic of BIM and automation, it is first necessary to define the term automation. The seminar provides an overview of the various terminologies, systems, and methods, with a particular focus on robotic systems and monitoring systems.

The applicability of automation technologies and their digital (BIM) foundation is explained during the seminar. Initially, the impact of potential automation technologies on BIM properties and models is discussed. Building on this, practical examples are used to illustrate the individual functionalities of automation technologies along the information models.

Following the theoretical introduction to robotic and automation systems, various practical application scenarios—such as digital as-built documentation and construction progress monitoring, cable-driven robots, and drilling robots throughout the BIM lifecycle—are presented. Their added value as well as existing challenges are explained and discussed with the participants.
